WALKING IN THE LIGHT
1 John 1:5-7
This then is the message which we have heard of him, and declare unto you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 1Jn 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: 1Jn 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.
John introduces us to the image of light (Joh_1:5). God is light, and Satan is the prince of darkness (Luk_22:53). To obey Him is to walk in the light; to disobey is to walk in darkness. Keep in mind that fellowship is a matter of light and darkness; sonship is a matter of life and death. (copied)
Fellowship in the life of the believer is essential to a healthy Christian life, walk, and ministry. Here we see God is light. He is pure, holy, and perfect. If we would walk with God in perfect fellowship, we must also have a life of light and holiness. John is making it clear that the believer who does not walk in the light is out of fellowship with the Father and the Son. The context shows that there is a solution to the sin problem. It is the blood of Christ. His blood cleanses us from all sin when we recognize our sin and confess it to Him. This is found in verse nine. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Our duty as believers is to walk in the light and maintain our fellowship with the Savior. Are we walking in the light as He is in the light?
John devotes the majority of this book to the subject of fellowship with the Lord and with other believers. This is the test of the believer. Are we where we should be in our walk with the Lord? If we are not, then we need to find the problem, confess it, and receive forgiveness in order to restore true fellowship with the Lord; by doing this, we can truly walk in the light. This cleansing process comes when we apply 1 John 1:9. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
