The Majestic God

Psalms 8:3-4

When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained;   What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

From the top of a mountain, we can observe the stars more clearly.  Early men used those heights for their observatories and were amazed at all they could see.  The heavens have always been a fascination for men.  The ancients studied the heavens and classified the constellations.  They saw in them the stories of the great men of the past and the mythical gods of the Greek pantheon.  Many of the nations also had special men whom today we would call astrologers whose main duty was to study the stars and try to read the future from what they saw.

Even in the Bible, we find references to these groups.  The book of Daniel mentions groups of wise men who could supposedly see the future.  For example, in Daniel 2:2 we see, Then the king commanded to call the magicians, and the astrologers, and the sorcerers, and the Chaldeans, for to shew the king his dreams. So they came and stood before the king.   The wise men of Matthew 2 were men who studied the stars and, in so doing, were shown the coming birth of the Savior.

Today, we have telescopes in space to study the heavens and map the galaxies in the universe.  We are told that the distances of space are so great that it takes millions of light years for the light to arrive from some of the most distant stars.  When I think of these huge distances, I am overwhelmed by the greatness of God.  The Scriptures tell us that the stars were placed there by the fingers of God, and in Genesis 1:16 we read, And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. Gen 1:17  And God set them in the firmament of the heaven.  In this verse, it seems that the stars were almost an afterthought.  To God, creation seemed a small thing, but then we think of the second verse that says, What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?  God's love is so great that He made all this for us.  Man was God's climax of creation, and we were formed in His own image.  What love this is!  In 1 John 3:1, we see a tremendous statement: Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God...  All of God's creation shows us His majesty, but even greater than creation is God's love for us.   Have you stopped today to thank Our Majestic God for Who He is and what He has done, and for the love that He has shown to you?
