The Son of God
Mark 15:33-41
And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. Mar 15:34 And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Mar 15:35 And some of them that stood by, when they heard it, said, Behold, he calleth Elias. Mar 15:36 And one ran and filled a spunge full of vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink, saying, Let alone; let us see whether Elias will come to take him down. Mar 15:37 And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. Mar 15:38 And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. Mar 15:39 And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God. Mar 15:40 There were also women looking on afar off: among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome; Mar 15:41 (Who also, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and ministered unto him;) and many other women which came up with him unto Jerusalem.
Jesus was crucified, as we saw yesterday. He was nailed to the cross about nine in the morning. When three hours had passed, a darkness covered the land. It was during this time that Jesus was carrying the sin of the world. He was forsaken by the Father because the Lord God cannot look upon sin. And when the sixth hour was come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani? which is, being interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Can you imagine? This was the only moment that Jesus was not in prefect fellowship with the Father. That was why He cried out in the Garden of Gethsemane, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done (Luke 22:42).
For three hours, the darkness prevailed. It reminded the people of the plague of Exodus 10:21-22. That darkness lasted three days; this one was only three hours, but it was sufficient. It was then that Jesus paid the debt for man’s sin. And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and gave up the ghost. We find the full meaning of this in John 19:30. When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost. Jesus said that it was finished. Redemption was complete. The sin debt had been paid, and the Father was satisfied with Jesus’ sacrifice. Yet it pleased the LORD to bruise him; he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his soul an offering for sin… He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities (Isa 53:10-11).
This final cry of Jesus was understood by those standing nearby. They saw that the temple was damaged by the earthquake and the way into the Holy of Holies was open so that common man could enter God’s presence. And the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom. Even the Roman soldier in charge of the crucifixion of Christ understood that He was not just another criminal; He was God in the flesh. And when the centurion, which stood over against him, saw that he so cried out, and gave up the ghost, he said, Truly this man was the Son of God.
Yes, Jesus is the Son of God, and He is also our Savior who loved us with the ultimate sacrifice. He died on the cross there in Jerusalem, but now He is alive forever more. Praise the Lord! __________________________________________________________________
