Battle Weapons

Ephesians 6:17-18

And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:  Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.

We have been looking at the armor of the Christian soldier which provides protection from the enemy.  Today, we come to the offensive battle weapons that are available to the believer.   In this passage, there are two weapons that we need to learn how to use.  They are the Word of God and the power of prayer.

Just as a soldier must train to be prepared for battle, the believer must also be prepared for the spiritual battle.  The soldier must go through vigorous physical and mental preparation to be able to go into battle with the enemy.  Long weeks in “boot camp” are required to get him ready.  The soldier must also spend much time getting to know his weapons.  When he does, he soon becomes proficient in their use and knows how to use them effectively to accomplish the task for which they are made.  But for the believer, strength and ability do not come from within himself.  The spiritual weapons that God provides for this battle are themselves the only power needed.

These weapons of the believer’s warfare are the Word of God and the power of prayer.  When Jesus was attacked by the devil, it was the power of the Word of God that gave the victory over the adversary.  This stands true for us today.  As we take the Word of God and apply it in each of the battle situations in which we find ourselves, we also can achieve victory as the Word of God does its work.

The same is also true with prayer.  Notice the word “all” in verse 18. Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.  When we pray, we realize that the power of prayer is all inclusive...  all prayer and supplication, all perseverance and supplication, for all the saints.  The power of prayer is the source of victory for the believer.  We have the necessary weapons, but we must use them!

As believers, we are in a battle.  If we do not think we are, we are defeated already.  When we understand that the battle is real, then we must utilize the armor that God gives us.  We then take these offensive weapons and stand firm and win the battle.  God has given us all we need to have victory in our battle against our spiritual foe.  We must just use these battle weapons of the Word of God and the power of prayer!
