A Closer Walk with Christ in 2026
Philippians 4:1-3
Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord, my dearly beloved. I beseech Euodias, and beseech Syntyche, that they be of the same mind in the Lord. And I intreat thee also, true yokefellow, help those women which labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with other my fellow laborers, whose names are in the book of life.
Paul loved to encourage others. Maybe he saw this trait in Barnabus, who was called the “Son of Consolation.” It was Barnabus who first brought Paul to meet the apostles in Jerusalem. Later, he went to Tarsus to get Paul to involve him in the ministry in Antioch. They traveled together on the first missionary journey as they went to Cypress, and then to southern Asia Minor where they planted the first churches. As a result, Paul learned the importance of helping others.
While he was writing the letter to the Philippians, even though the main purpose was to thank them for the gifts which they had sent, he knew that there was a problem with division in the church.
In chapter two, we saw that he encouraged believers to be of one mind and not to think of their own egotistical, personal desires. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others, Philippians 2:3-4.
He begins this chapter with today’s verses by encouraging them to be united in Christ. Therefore, my brethren dearly beloved and longed for, my joy and crown, so stand fast in the Lord. To try to solve the breach in the church, Paul then names two of the women who were causing the problems. I would hate for everyone to see my name mentioned in the Bible for causing problems, but Paul thought it was necessary for these women to realize what selfishness can do to a congregation.
There was also an individual in the church on whom Paul could rely to help correct the women. He is simply called a true yokefellow. This person was one who could be trusted with the spiritual ministry of helping others to be right.
There is a goal for which each of us should strive: that we might be known as someone who is always ready to help others in their time of need.
