Giving Sight

Mark 10:46-52

And they came to Jericho: and as he went out of Jericho with his disciples and a great number of people, blind Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, sat by the highway side begging. Mar 10:47  And when he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to cry out, and say, Jesus, thou Son of David, have mercy on me. Mar 10:48  And many charged him that he should hold his peace: but he cried the more a great deal, Thou Son of David, have mercy on me. Mar 10:49  And Jesus stood still, and commanded him to be called. And they call the blind man, saying unto him, Be of good comfort, rise; he calleth thee. Mar 10:50  And he, casting away his garment, rose, and came to Jesus. Mar 10:51  And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight. Mar 10:52  And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way.

The miracles of the Lord never cease to amaze me!  The Lord Jesus Christ is the God of miracles.  The miracle we see today is repeated in three of the  four gospels.  It is a mighty miracle because only the Lord Jesus is recorded to have restored sight to the blind.  Only the God of creation, who made man, can make him whole again.  Praise the Lord.

Jesus had a lot to say about the blind.  The word “blind” is found 50 times in the gospels and Acts.  So, there is much to learn from this short passage today.

The Lord applied the word “blind” to those who would not see the truth of the Scriptures.  The Pharisees were self-righteous leaders in Israel who would not accept that He, Jesus, was sent from God.  Jesus goes even further to show that not only would they not accept Him, but they also kept others from seeing the truth of who He was.  Then came his disciples, and said unto him, Knowest thou that the Pharisees were offended, after they heard this saying? …Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch (Matthew 15:12;14).

Giving sight is also used to demonstrate the Lordship of Christ.  In Luke seven, we find that John the Baptist was in prison and had doubts concerning the person of Jesus.  He sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus if He was really the Messiah.  In order to answer their question, Jesus demonstrated His power through the miracles He performed which fulfilled the promise of the Messiah as shown in Isaiah 42:6-7.  When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another?  And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight.  Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached.  And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me  (Luk 7:20-23).

Lastly, the healing of the man born blind has a lesson for us too.  After Jesus had healed him, the blind man was questioned about who healed him.  The Pharisees did not believe Jesus was the Messiah and that He could heal the blind.  The man declared thus, He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see (John 9:25).  His statement can refer to us when we come to faith in Christ.  We were blind, but now we see.  Praise the Lord that He is in the business of giving sight to those who are blinded by unbelief but later realize the truth of salvation through Jesus Christ!

Prayer Needs

Please pray for Dr. Joe Jordan.  He is back in the hospital with a partially collapsed lung and with concern about his kidneys.  On Tuesday he seemed a bit better, but he still has a long way to go.

Frances Lee asked us to please pray for the Matt Paige family, the husband of one of Tammy’s friends.   He passed away on Tuesday.

Please pray for Shirley and Kenny Deans.  Shirley has learned that the lymphoma cancer has returned, and she will have a PET scan and a biopsy done to determine future treatment.  Kenny will need a heart catherization.  He will also be seeing a doctor for a sore on his right leg that will not heal.

Please pray for Carolyn Tyson’s niece and her husband Pam and Joe Wobbleton.  Joe had open heart surgery Friday morning because of a heart attack. The surgery went well, and he went home on Wednesday.   Pam has had several mini-strokes and will need surgery at Chapel Hill.

Praise the Lord!  Thank you for praying for Jennifer Teboe Buchamer.   She had a CT scan on Friday, April 17th.   All of the tumors had shrunk except for 2 that remained stable.  The doctors were greatly surprised.  Please continue to pray for complete healing.

Please pray for Robbie Harvey, who has MAC lung disease.   He fell and broke several ribs.  He is now home from the hospital but in a lot of pain.  He has started a new medication for his lung disease.

Please pray for Peggy Warren.  She is in a lot of pain from a partially crushed disc in her lower back.  However, surgery is not recommended.

Please continue to pray for Marvin Silverthorne for his eyesight to improve.
