All Things New – Part 5

The New Covenant

Hebrews 8:13

In speaking of a new covenant, he makes the first one obsolete. And what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to vanish away.

We continue to look at the series of “New Things” that we see in the New Testament.  In all, there are at least seven of these new things or events that are listed. Today, we will look at the next one, which is the New Covenant.

The first place we see the New Covenant is found in Jeremiah 31:31. This covenant is promised for Israel, and in the Kingdom, the covenant will be fully enacted.  We find the New Covenant explained more in the book of Hebrews.  There we see that the New Covenant was given because the first covenant that was made was not adequate to meet the needs of man’s redemption.

The New Covenant is based on the finished work of Christ on the cross, and as a result, it will be established in the hearts of believers, not just a series of commandments which man could not keep.  That is why it says in 2 Corinthians 3:5-6, Not that we are sufficient in ourselves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God, who has made us sufficient to be ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

This New Covenant stands as a new relationship for all believers.  It is the Holy Spirit which begins to fulfill this New Covenant.  But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, he will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you (John 14:26).  The ministry of the Holy Spirit allows us to understand the teachings of the Word when we read the Scriptures.

Christ has made it possible for us to know Him in a new and intimate way through His death on the cross.  We are now able to draw near and find Him every time we need Him.  Hebrews 4:16 says, Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.   Yes, in this new year, let’s take advantage of the New Covenant relationship and draw near to our Lord Jesus as we have been invited to do!
