The Great Physician

Mark 6:53-56

And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. Mar 6:54  And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, ar 6:55  And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. Mar 6:56  And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

When the Lord Jesus and the disciples arrived in Bethsaida, they were met by a great multitude of people bringing their sick to Jesus.  And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore.  And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him,  And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick.

We know that Jesus is the Great Physician and that healing was very important to His ministry, but this was not the primary reason He came.  We find in the Scriptures that Christ’s purpose in coming was for the lost.  And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.  I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance (Luke 5:31-32).   It is also stated that He came for the lost in Luke 19:  For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost (Luke 19:10).

But His healing ministry was used to verify that He truly was God in the flesh.  This is seen in the portion from Matthew that states, For whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Arise, and walk?  But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.  And he arose, and departed to his house  (Matthew 9:5-7).  Here we see that Jesus healed the man as proof that He could both forgive sin and heal.  The same power was necessary for both to take place.

Many today are in need of healing, but it is also true that more than physical healing, men and women today need the touch of spiritual healing which can save their souls.

Yes, Jesus is the Great Physician, but He is the Savior first and foremost.  As we approach Easter this year, let’s not forget that Jesus came to die on the cross so that all men can be saved.  This is the promise of 1 John 2:2,  And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

Praise the Lord we serve a risen Savior who can save everyone who comes to Him for salvation.  Let’s spread the Word so that all can come to Him and be healed!
