A Closer Walk with Christ in 2026

Jesus, the Perfect Sacrifice

Hebrews 8:1-6

Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; Heb 8:2  A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man. Heb 8:3  For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer. Heb 8:4  For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Heb 8:5  Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount. Heb 8:6  But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

The context of this portion proves that Jesus is superior.  He is superior to the prophets. He is superior to the angels. He is superior to Moses. He is superior to the Aaronic priesthood.  He is a priest forever after the order of Melchisedec and, therefore, superior to the Old Testament sacrificial system.  Here in chapter eight, we will see that Christ is superior in His sanctuary and His sacrifice.

The sanctuary of the Old Testament was the tabernacle in the beginning, later the Temple of Solomon, and lastly Herod’s Temple.  The sacrifices were offered daily at these locations, but they could only cover sin.  When Christ offered Himself as a once and for all sacrifice, He said on the cross, “It is finished.”  That means His sacrifice was sufficient to pay for all the sins of all men for all time.  Not only that, when He entered the heavenly temple, it was the real temple that had served as a pattern for the other temples and tabernacles.  Not only that, when Christ entered His Holy Temple, He sat down showing that His work was over and done.  Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum: We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in the heavens; A minister of the sanctuary, and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

His sacrifice and sanctuary are both superior to the earthly ones because His was the fulfillment of what had been promised.  The sacrifice of Aaron was a picture that looked forward to Christ’s coming and His finished work.  For every high priest is ordained to offer gifts and sacrifices: wherefore it is of necessity that this man have somewhat also to offer.  For if he were on earth, he should not be a priest, seeing that there are priests that offer gifts according to the law: Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses was admonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thou make all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.

Now Christ is our mediator between God and man.  Under the Old Covenant, there was never a payment for sin.  Now Christ becomes the mediator of a better covenant.  That New Covenant is the perfect covenant that provides eternal life for all who will believe.  Praise the Lord for that perfect sacrifice!
