Abraham the Father

Genesis 21:1-7

The LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised. Gen 21:2  And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him. Gen 21:3  Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac. Gen 21:4  And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. Gen 21:5  Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. Gen 21:6  And Sarah said, "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me." Gen 21:7  And she said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age."

As we approach Father’s Day, we want to look at an important father in the Scriptures.  In this portion, we find the time is a year after the visit of the angels, and like God prophesied, Sarah has become pregnant as was promised.  The LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did to Sarah as he had promised.  And Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age at the time of which God had spoken to him.   When we look at the original language of Hebrews 11, we see, Sarah herself received power to conceive.  This literally means that “she was able to cast down seed.”  God restored to both Sarah and Abraham the ability to reproduce and have children, even though they had lost that ability through the aging process.  With God, all things are possible.  We will see even later that Abraham will be able to re-marry and have children with another wife after Sarah passes away.

But now, we find Abraham as a father giving a name to his newborn child.  Abraham called the name of his son who was born to him, whom Sarah bore him, Isaac.  And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him.  Abraham is obeying once again because the Lord had told him the year before what the name of the child would be.  He called his son Isaac.  The name means “laughter,” and the reason is very clear.  Abraham and Sarah can truly laugh with joy because the promised child for which they had been waiting for  the previous twenty-five years had finally arrived.  Now the promise of a great multitude of heirs would be possible, and it would come through a child of their own, not the child of another woman, as with Hagar and her son Ishmael.

Sarah was so content that she made an outstanding statement about the child.  "God has made laughter for me; everyone who hears will laugh over me." Can you imagine starting a family when you are one hundred years old?  When spending time with my grandchildren, I realize why God gives children to young people. They have the strength and stamina to keep up with little ones.  But God gave that strength to Abraham, for he would have another fifty years to enjoy his son.  Abraham was a good father who loved his son.  Later we will find out just how much he loved Issac, but for now we see that as a father he makes provision for this son and guides him as he teaches him to develop a love for God and to live a very productive life.  He was truly a good father, which is an example for us as we look forward to Father’s Day this weekend.
